CASTILE, NY – Sophomore Ania Shiyanova and junior Natascha Alves represented Rutgers-Newark in the 2009 NCAA Atlantic Regional Women's Cross Country Championship hosted by Geneseo State University in Letchworth State Park.

First-year runner Shiyanova capped her rookie season by shaving 1:44.82 off of her previous personal best at the 6-kilomter distance, beating Alves for the first time in the process. 

In the highly-competitive field of 239 runners, Shiyanova clocked a 28:03.6 to finish 208th overall. Alves, who had been the top finisher in each of the Scarlet Raiders' six previous meets, clocked a 28:35.1 to come in eight spots behind her teammate.
