NEWARK, NJ – After a brief two-week layoff, Rutgers-Newark baseball players are back in action beginning this week in summer league action. Lefthander Billy Cerruti heads a list of 22 returning letterwinners who will be competing in summer collegiate wood bat leagues. 

Cerruti will be pitching for Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League. In its 14th season, the CPL is considered one of the top NCAA sanctioned, MLB sponsored leagues in the country. It features 15 teams across North and South Carolina, and Virginia. Since its inception, the CPL has seen over 100 professional players pass through its league including Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander , Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis. 

“This summer will be a great opportunity and invaluable experience for Billy,” said head coach Mark Rizzi. “After performing so well in the New York Collegiate League last summer, Billy has earned the chance to pitch in this league. He will be facing some outstanding hitters from some Top 25 Division 1 programs.”
