SMYRNA, Del (October 15, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's cross country team competed at the Delaware State University Pre-Conference Run Saturday and did quite well, placing sixth against a lot of Division I competition.
The Scarlet Raiders finished with a team total of 137 and finished ahead of DI foes Howard and Morgan State and they were just eight points behind fifth place DSU and 14 points back of fourth place Wesley (DIII).
North Carolina A&T won the eight-team event with a team score of 37 and Mount Saint Mary was second (40).
Leading the Scarlet Raiders was junior
LJ McKenzie who clocked a career-best time of 27:53.2 and finished just outside the top-10 in 11th place. The reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Runner of the Week crushed his season-best time of 28:25.2 from September 24 and is trending in the right direction as the Scarlet Raiders begin to look to the NJAC Championships in two weeks.
Freshman
Ramses Leon and senior
Hakan Yuksel crossed the tape back-to-back at 30:00.3 and 30:17.6. The duo occupied places 23 and 24 and clocked season-bests as well. Yuksel's previous top time this season was 30:37.6 and Leon took more than 3:30 off his previous mark.
The final two scored Rutgers-Newark runners were junior
John Conca and senior
DJ Jordan who finished 39th and 40th. Conca pocketed a 32:59.30 and Jordan finished in 33:18.2. The time was a season-best for Jordan by more than two minutes.
Rookie
Tim Samuel was also in action, taking 42nd on the back of a 33:43.00 and classmate
Justin Jones carded a 36:02.3 (47th). Sophomore
Michael Peralta turned in a 36:11.9, taking 51st overall, and freshman
Timothy Torres clocked a 38:36 and placed 56th to round out the Rutgers-Newark runners.
The Scarlet Raiders return to competitive action on October 29 in Galloway, N.J. at the NJAC Championships.
