SMYRNA, Del (October 15, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's cross country team ran at the 5K Delaware State University Pre-Conference Run Saturday in Smyrna, Del.
The Scarlet Raiders placed eighth of nine teams in competition, but the R-N women were solid against many Division I teams and several top Division III sides. Newark finished with a team total of 213 as North Carolina A&T won the event with a 39. Mount Saint Mary was second (52).
Leading the Scarlet Raiders was freshman
Kamila Ivashka who carded a 22:35.80 and placed 34th overall. Senior
Giovanna Noguera was next, taking 40th on the back of a 23:49.3, and freshman
Success Uhunmwangho was right behind her in 42nd, clocking a 24:04.6.
Sophomore
Jackie Peeke-Brown was the fourth scored Scarlet Raider runner, breaking the tape at 25:04.4 (47th), and freshman
Comfort Akinbo was the 51st scored runner to finish with a time of 27:18.5.
Also competing for Rutgers-Newark Saturday were freshmen
Nessie Joseph and
Bisoye Ajibola-Taiwo who turned in times of 34:11.9 and 35:44.9 and placed 64th and 65th.
Overall, the Scarlet Raiders performed well, racing on a 5K course for the first (and most-likely only) time this season.
Rutgers-Newark will return to competition in two weeks at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships.
