NEWARK, N.J. (October 28, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team – ranked seventh nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 14th by D3soccer.com – earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament with a 2-0 win at William Paterson University Tuesday night in Wayne.
The win over Paterson was the team's 18th of the season which is a new program-record for wins, and the 11th shutout of the year is also a new high-water mark for the program. R-N finishes its regular season with a record of 18-2-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the NJAC.
So what's next? The Scarlet Raiders will host the winner of fourth-seeded Rutgers University-Camden and fifth-seeded Montclair State University Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field. The winner of Tuesday's semifinal will play Friday for the NJAC title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
In the Ranks: Rutgers-Newark currently boasts national rankings of No. 7 (NSCAA) and No. 14 (D3soccer.com). The Scarlet Raiders are ranked No. 2 in the South Atlantic region according to the latest Division III Regional Rankings released by the NCAA Wednesday evening.
#ROADWARRIORS: R-N finished its regular season with a ridiculous 11 wins outside of Newark. The team went 9-2-0 in true road matches and 2-0-0 in neutral site games.
Winning Ways: After starting the year 6-2-0 in games all played away from Alumni Field, Rutgers-Newark closed the year with 12-straight wins. Amazingly, nine of those 12 wins came via shutout.
Stingy! The Rutgers-Newark defense is allowing just .60 goals-against per game and has allowed just 12 total goals-against all season long. The Scarlet Raiders have allowed multiple goals in just two matches all season long.
Metric Marks…Team: As a team, Rutgers-Newark is littered all over the national and conference stat ranks. The Raiders are third nationally with an .892 saves percentage and also crack the top-10 (No. 9) in winning percentage (.900). The team's 53 goals are No. 13 and their 145 points are 16th, while R-N checks in No. 20 in team goals-against average (.60) and No. 25 in both shutout percentage (.55) and total assists (39). Conference-wise, Rutgers-Newark paces the NJAC in saves percentage, shutout percentage and team goals-against average.
Metric Marks…Individual: Freshman
Fabio De Sousa is currently No. 2 in the nation in game-winning goals with eight, while freshman
Andres Medina's .880 saves percentage is fifth nationally. De Sousa is No. 19 in total points (34), No. 30 in total goals (13) and No. 40 in total assists (eight). Medina cracks the top-40 in goals-against average at No. 34.
