GLASSBORO, N.J. (November 11, 2016) – Junior
LJ McKenzie led the Rutgers University-Newark men's cross country team to a 38th place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional hosted by Rowan University Saturday.
McKenzie clocked a time of 27:12.7 on the 8K course, setting a new personal-best and finishing in 156th place. The time is good for second all-time in Rutgers-Newark men's cross country history and just 21-plus seconds off the record of 26:51.00 set by Tauqueer Qazi back at the 2010 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships. McKenzie's previous personal-best was 27:33.1.
A total of 44 colleges and universities competed at the 2016 Atlantic Regional with SUNY Geneseo winning the event with a team score of 51. RPI was second and The College of New Jersey took third as a total of 303 student-athletes competed.
Freshman
Ramses Leon was next, finishing in 28 minutes and cracking the top-200 in 199th place. Leon set a new personal-record with his time as well and now holds spots seven and nine on the program-record board.
Senior
Hakan Yuksel was next for Newark, placing 214th on the back of a 28:34.2, while junior
Nakier Johnson took 251st with a 29:54.2. Johnson – who only competed in several races this season for R-N - pocketed a new personal-record, while Yuksel PR'd by nearly a full minute. It was the third-straight outing Yuksel tallied a new personal-best finish.
Freshman
Robert King III was the last Newark runner that was scored, picking up a 30:36.6 (262nd), and also running for the Scarlet Raiders was junior
John Conca and senior
DJ Jordan. Conca picked up a 30:43.8 (265th) and Jordan crossed the line at 32:47.4 (282nd). King's time was a new personal-best for the rookie as all five Rutgers-Newark scored runners saved their best performance of the season for the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
