’17 Men’s Volleyball Season Coming Quickly

Complete Schedule

NEWARK, N.J. (December 15, 2016)
- Fresh off back-to-back appearances in the 'Elite Eight' of the NCAA Tournament, the Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team will begin its 2017 season in mid-January.

Rutgers Newark finished the 2016 season ranked sixth in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III poll with a record of 24-4 and a 10-2 mark in conference play.

The Scarlet Raiders will open the season hosting The Golden Dome Invitational. The tournament will feature some of the top teams in the nation, including a rematch against geographic rival Stevens Institute of Technology, who topped the Raiders in the national quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA tournament, and national power UC Santa Cruz.

"Starting the year with The Golden Dome Invitational is always exciting, but I think this year's field is incredible," said Head Coach Pedro Trevino. "Stevens and UC Santa Cruz are two of the top programs in the country, and Lasell College, Elmira College and Juniata College are all excellent teams."

Following the invitational, the Scarlet Raiders will head to the Bronx to square off against Southern Virginia University and Lehman College.

R-N will return to The Golden Dome for four consecutive home contests beginning with a non-conference match against Division I and same-city rival New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Raiders will then host their Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) opener on February 10 against Juniata College, followed by two more home conference match-ups against Thiel College and Cairn University.

The Raiders then head to Maryland on February 18 where they will be seeking revenge against conference rival Stevenson University who topped them in the 2016 CVC title match.

Stevens Institute of Technology will host Newark next before a trip to Marymount University and Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia for two CVC contests.

New Jersey City University will visit The Golden Dome February 28 before the Raiders will embark on a six-game road trip where they will be traveling to Pennsylvania and New York.

Rutgers-Newark comes back home to host Stevenson and Alvernia University in conference showdowns before heading to CVC rival Cairn University.

Two conference matches against Marymount and Eastern Mennonite will close out the home portion of the 2017 schedule before two final conference stand-offs on the road against Juniata and Thiel in Pennsylvania.

"We lost a lot of talent last year to graduation, but I don't think that changes our goals," added Trevino. "We have guys ready to step into larger roles, and a lot of talented players joining the program, so I expect us to be playing in the postseason for a third-straight year."
