STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (December 2, 2016) – Junior
Nakier Johnson set a new school-record in the 400 and sophomore
Edward Dennerlein did the same in the shot put as the pair also qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 2016-17 season-opener for Rutgers University-Newark men's track & field.
Dennerlein placed fifth in the shot with a 15.37 meter heave to surpass the high bar he set last year. The second-year Scarlet Raider led four Scarlet Raiders in the event as senior
Anthony Cianfrini placed 18th (10.53 meters), freshman
Aldeen McKinnis placed 20th (9.83 meters) and sophomore
Chris Paz was 21st (9.82 meters).
Dennerlein was also the top R-N competitor in the weight throw, launching a 14.29 meter best toss and finishing eighth, while Cianfrini cleared 11.37 meters which was good for 14th.
Johnson's school-record in the "4" was 49.03 as the third-year all-conference performer broke his own mark but placements in the 400 were not available in the posted results. Sophomore
Clarence Smith qualified for ECAC's in the 400, pocketing a new personal-record with a 49.82. Sophomore
Prosper Delle – returning from a leg injury – was next, turning in a 51.29, freshman
Robert King III followed (52.09) and freshman
Justin Jones (52.84) was behind King III.
Freshman Isaiah Jones just missed ECAC qualification with a solid 7.15 in the 60-meter dash, placing seventh overall, while rookie
Justin Percival was 15th (7.37) and junior
Richard Cho was 27th (7.90). In the 200, King III cracked the top-10 at No. 7, clocking a 22.89, while Jones was 16th (23.59), Percival was 23rd (24.06) and Cho was 34th (25.69).
Two Scarlet Raiders were in the top-10 in the 500 as junior
John Conca was sixth (1:10.73) and senior
DJ Jordan was eighth (1:11.68). Freshman
Mosha Manjaro also ran the "5", carding a 1:18.75, and sophomore
Michael Peralta was 12th with a 1:22.99.

Ramses Leon was the only Raider in the 800-meter run, breaking the tape at 2:11.72 (23rd), and veteran
Hakan Yuksel tallied a 4:52.56 in placing 22nd in the mile. Junior
LJ McKenzie was the final R-N distance competitor, clocking a 9:29.81 in the 3,000-meter run.
Jones stayed busy, placing 18th in the long jump, clearing 5.45 meters, but sophomore
Hassan Haywood led R-N in the event with a 5.89 which was good for 13th. Haywood also did the triple jump, cracking the top-10 (eighth) with a 12.86 meter score.
A total of nine Scarlet Raider finishes were in the top-10 Friday night, and R-N will look to continued success in its next meet in on January 13 at the New York Armory in Manhattan.
