STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (December 2, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's track & field program began the 2016-17 indoor season Friday night at the Metro Holiday Season-Opener in Staten Island at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex.
Leading the Scarlet Raiders was sophomore
Jackie Peeke-Brown who broke the school-record in the 400-meter dash. The second-year all-conference honoree clocked a 57.98 in the event and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in the process. Freshman
Success Uhunmwangho clocked a 63.12 in the 400 and was followed by freshman
Kamila Ivashka (61.08), freshman
Nessie Joseph, freshman
Comfort Akinbo (63.69) and freshman
Esder Chong (65.89).
Peeke-Brown was also the top Scarlet Raider finisher in the 200, breaking the tape at 26.36 in 11th place. Uhunmwangho was next in the "2" as the rookie was right behind JPB with a time of 26.52 (13th), and she was followed by Akinbo (28.17; 26th) and freshman
Crystal Gosney (29.92; 34th). Gosney was the only Rutgers-Newark competitor in the 60-meter dash, tallying a 9.12 and taking 23rd overall.
Rookie
Bisoye Ajibola-Taiwo turned in a 3:27.76 in the 800-meter run, placing 14th, and a trio of Scarlet Raiders competed in the shot put. Freshman
Martine Dorceoly was 16th (7.87 meters), freshman
Dorienne Robinson was 19th (6.47 meters) and freshman Anna Agbotse was 19th (6.15 meters).
R-N ran in one relay event in the season-opener as the team of Uhunmwangho, Peeke-Brown, Akinbo and Ivashka combined for a time of 4:13.60 in the 4x400, claiming ninth place.
Student-athletes from 13 different colleges and universities in the area competed at the Metro Holiday Opener in Staten Island.
Rutgers-Newark will continue to practice until the calendar changes to 2017, and the Scarlet Raiders return to competitive action in New York, N.Y. at the Ramapo No Name Meet on January 13.
