CVC Preseason Poll | AVCA Preseason Poll
NEWARK, N.J. (January 11, 2017) – The nationally-ranked No. 11 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team was pegged fourth in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Preseason Poll, it was announced Wednesday night.
Stevenson University – the defending league champion – was picked to finish first, Marymount University was selected second and Juniata College was third. Holding places 5-through-8 were Eastern Mennonite University, Cairn University, Alvernia University and Thiel College.
Alvernia is a new member of the CVC this season, and on paper, the conference is one of the best in the nation with Rutgers-Newark (No. 11), Stevenson (No. 5) and Juniata (No. 15) all appearing in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 15, and Marymount receiving votes.
The Scarlet Raiders have made a name for themselves in their first two seasons as members of NCAA Division III, twice making the national tournament and compiling a splendid record of 46-14 over the last two years. Rutgers-Newark has gone 21-3 in conference play over that same span, and R-N won the 2015 CVC title in its first season as a member of the league.
Rutgers-Newark will host The Golden Dome Invitational on January 20 and 21 in Newark and opens conference play at home against Juniata on February 10.
"There is no doubt that our conference is getting better and more challenging as time passes and that's great for our program and the league in general," said Scarlet Raider Head Coach
Pedro Trevino. "From top-to-bottom this year we are going to need to come ready to play each and every time out and that's definitely exciting."
Rutgers-Newark went 10-2 in the league last year and 11-1 the previous year and has dropped just one single CVC match inside The Golden Dome since 2015.
