Scarlet Raider Baseball Right Around the Corner!

2017 Schedule

NEWARK, N.J. (January 25, 2017)
– On Monday, the Rutgers University-Newark baseball team will officially hold its first practice of the 2017 season, and 18 days later the Scarlet Raiders will open their season in Fayetteville, N.C. at the Fayetteville Tournament.

Here is how the rest of the Scarlet Raider ledger shakes out.

Early Bird Gets the Worm… Rutgers-Newark will get '17 started early for a Northeast team, heading to North Carolina to take on Stevenson University, Frostburg State University and Penn State University-Abington February 17, 18 and 19 as part of the Fayetteville Tournament. It will be the team's earliest start to a season since 2013.

Home but still Away… The Raiders will return North for a "home" game on February 28. The catch? Despite being the home team, the game will take place at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. against PSU-Abington.

Spring Break! After two road dates – one at MCU Park in Brooklyn (home of the Brooklyn Cyclones) – the Raiders will travel to Myrtle Beach for seven games from March 11-18. It will be the team's annual Spring Break Trip.

NJAC Prep… Upon returning to New Jersey, R-N will battle Lehman College in the Bronx before playing on its home field – Riverfront Stadium – for the first time against Baruch College (March 23) and Muhlenberg College (March 27). Three more non-conference matchups await the Scarlet Raiders before they kick off New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

The NJAC… Rutgers-Newark will visit The College of New Jersey for a doubleheader on April 1 to get league play underway. The Raiders visit TCNJ and Rutgers University-Camden for twinbills inside the conference, and host NJAC rivals Rowan University, Ramapo College and Montclair State University for double dips this year. Home-and-home series with New Jersey City University, William Paterson University, Kean University and Stockton University are also on the schedule. All home-and-home matchups will take place on Thursdays and Fridays, with the doubleheaders being played on Saturdays.

Outside the League… During the "league" portion of the slate, R-N will also play several non-conference contests at home against DeSales University and Alvernia University (April 4 and April 11).

Postseason… After improving its number of overall and league wins in 2016, Rutgers-Newark will be eyeing an NJAC Championship Tournament berth in 2017. That tournament is scheduled to get underway on May 2.

Some Numbers to Chew on… The Scarlet Raiders will play in four states this year – New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and South Carolina. A total of 40 games are scheduled – the maximum number of games for a Division III team. Of the 40 contests, 17 are scheduled as "home" games, 16 games are slated for Riverfront Stadium, 10 games are at neutral sites and 13 contests are on the road. Rutgers-Newark will play a total of 18 NJAC games – 10 at home and eight on the road.
