NEWARK, N.J. (August 18, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team – fresh off its first appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament since 2006 – was picked to finish sixth in the league in a poll of the NJAC's nine head coaches.
Rutgers-Newark finished the '16 season sixth in the league standings after earning a trio of NJAC wins, and the Scarlet Raiders finished 15-14 overall.
Stockton University was selected as the preseason favorite and Ramapo College was second despite receiving the most first-place votes of any league team. Montclair State University, Kean University (dark horse) and Rowan University rounded out the top five, while Rutgers-Newark, Rutgers University-Camden, William Paterson University and New Jersey City University followed.
The 36th season of NJAC women's volleyball will get under way on Friday, September 1 with five NJAC teams in non-conference action. Conference play will begin just 11 days later with the first league matches scheduled for Tuesday, September 12.
The top six regular season finishers will advance to the 2017 NJAC Championship Tournament which will begin with first round action on Tuesday, October 31. The NJAC Tournament semifinals will be conducted on Thursday, November 2, and the league championship match will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed on Saturday, November 4. The winner of the NJAC Tournament receives the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
Rutgers-Newark will begin its 2017 campaign with a September 1 home match against the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the team's first conference contest of the season will be at Rowan on September 12.

Megan Knott, the Scarlet Raiders also made the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The program lost only two players to graduation so R-N is primed for another run at postseason play.
