KANSAS CITY, Mo. (August 4, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team is ranked eighth in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division III National Preseason Poll, it was announced Thursday night.
Previously named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, the USC ledger ranks the top-25 teams in the nation each week throughout the season.
Rutgers-Newark is coming off to a trip to the 'Elite Eight' of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship in 2016, finishing the season ranked eighth as well. The Scarlet Raiders set a new record for wins with 21 and compiled an overall mark of 21-4-0.
Defending National Champion Tufts University checks in at No. 1, while Calvin College, University of St. Thomas, Brandeis University and Kenyon College round of the top-five.
Rowan University – who the Raiders visit in mid-October – is the only other New Jersey Athletic Conference team featured in the USC preseason ranks.
Rutgers-Newark opens practice during the third week of August and will play exhibition matches against Drew University and nationally-ranked No. 11 Messiah College before visiting Nazareth College and Rochester Institute of Technology to open the season.
The Scarlet Raiders rose as high as No. 4 in the 2016 NSCAA national poll, boasting wins over three nationally-ranked opponents and going 8-1-0 in NJAC play. R-N won 12-straight matches from September 19-October 26 and pitched six-straight shutouts from September 26-October 12.
