Liana Abreu was honored as Rutgers-Newark's 2011 Woman Athlete of the Year at the 20th annual Girls & Women in Sports Awards luncheon held by the N.J. Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
Abreu, a two-time first-team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference midfielder in women's soccer, joined honorees from universities, colleges and high schools from throughout the state on the campus of Seton Hall University on Sunday.
Rutgers-Newark's all-time leading scorer with 119 points and 51 goals in four seasons, Abreu was the Rutgers-Newark Co-Female Athlete of the Year and Female Scholar-Athlete of 2011-12. The criminal justice and psychology major was an academic all-American candidate.
