Rutgers-Newark Bounces Back Against Devils

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark freshman Kelly Fitzsimmons (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex HS) won a super tie-breaker third set to complete a 9-0 non-conference women's tennis win over FDU-Florham on The Golden Dome Courts.

The Scarlet Raiders (4-4) snapped a three-game losing streak while the Devils (2-8) fell after having won two of its previous three matches.

Fitzsimmons, who leveled her singles record on the No. 2 court at 4-4 on the season, split the first two sets against sophomore Megan Koenig (Jobstown, NJ/North Burlington Regional), winning 6-3 in the opener before falling, 6-2. Fitzsimmons earned a 10-7 win in the abbreviated third set.

Sophomore No. 1 singles player Nicole Rubinetti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) powered her way to a 6-3, 6-2 win over sophomore Jill Horn to pace straight-set victories on the other courts except for No. 6 where Raiders won by forfeit.

Rubinetti and sophomore Monica Iturralde (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley), who upped her singles mark to 7-1, raced to an 8-1 doubles win on the No. 1 court.

The Raiders will host William Paterson at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match before starting a grueling weekend. Rutgers-Newark hosts NYC Tech on Friday, Lehman on Saturday ant Ramapo on Sunday on The Golden Dome Courts.
