Verzi Sparks Rowan Past Scarlet Raiders

Rowan 3, Rutgers-Newark 1

Sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew

NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore midfielder Tanya Groszew (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) broke up the shutout, but sophomore midfielder Krista Verzi (Delran, NJ/Delran HS) had a hand in each Rowan goal as the Profs downed Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Alumni Field.

NCAA BOX SCORE

After a scoreless first half, the Profs (12-2-0, NJAC 5-1-0) reeled off the first three scores before a penalty kick by Groszew in the 88th minute ruined a shutout attempt by Rowan sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Volkomer (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock). Volkomer stopped three Rutgers-Newark shots.

Raider senior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made nine of her 13 saves in the opening half, but the Profs simply put too many shots on goal. Sixteen of their 21 shots were on goal while the Raiders put four of their eight on target.

Verzi chipped a through pass to freshman forward Michelle Carrocino (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional) who fired a shot into the left side of the goal in the 55th minute to break the ice. Verzi then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when she settled a centering pass from freshman forward Dana Ross (Delran, NJ/Delran) and launched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute.

Junior midfielder Emilie Wilson (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) added an insurance goal in 77th minute, taking a through pass to the right side from Verzi and driving toward the right corner before firing a shot just inside the far post.

Rowan dominated corner kicks, 8-1.

Rutgers-Newark (4-9-1, NJAC 1-5-1) visits Vassar on Tuesday at 4 o'clock while Rowan visits New Jersey City on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. for an NJAC contest.
