NJCU Maintains Share Of NJAC Lead

Sophomore outside hitter Rose Anna Beljour

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Sophomore outside hitter Rose Anna Beljour (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack HS) paced Rutgers-Newark with six kills, but New Jersey City swept past the Scarlet Raiders, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball match in the John J. Moore Center.

The Raiders (1-10, NJAC 0-3) also got 11 assists and three service aces from junior setter Nazly Hasanizadeh (Katy, TX/Alief Hastings) plus 11 digs from freshman libero Jen Ompod (Clifton, NJ/Clifton).

The Gothic Knights (15-4, NJAC 4-0) got a dozen kills from Michelle Cintron and 11 from Sarah Torres. Game scores were 30-14, 30-20, 30-14. NJCU senior all-America candidate Lizelle Cintron took just two swings in game one, but collected a match-high 12 digs before sitting out games two and three.

Raider sophomore outside hitter Sagan Caldwell (Romona, CA/Romona) notched five points with four kills and an ace while adding eight digs. Freshman middle blocker Crystal Navarro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) tallied four kills.

The Raiders scored the first four points of game two, holding the lead at 15-14 before allowing a seven-point NJCU run to turn the tables.

Rutgers-Newark now travels to Skidmore on Friday for a non-conference match contest taking on host Williams and Hamilton in a Saturday tri-match.
