Freshman forward Christien Vlahinich

NEWARK, NJ – Freshman forward Christien Vlahinich (Montvale, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional HS) struck a low shot across the box into the left side of the goal in the 102nd minute to lift Rutgers-Newark to a thrilling, 1-0 double-overtime victory over CCNY on Alumni Field.

NCAA BOX SCORE

The Scarlet Raiders (2-0-0) out shot the visiting Beavers, 42-4, but 17 saves by rookie goalkeeper Taiwo Alabi (Queens, NY) kept Rutgers-Newark off the board for the first three periods.

Vlahinich took a crossing pass from the right side from junior Aderson Cenoble (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) on the right side of the box, pivoted while being marked by two Beaver defenders and ripped the low shot into the lower left corner of the net to end the evening.

In a match that they dominated from start to finish, the Raiders peppered the Beaver goal with 11 shots in the opening half, an incredible 26 shots in the second period and four shots in the first overtime without success.  Vlahinich's goal came on the team's first try of the final period.  Rutgers-Newark forged a 19-1 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Frances (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) needed to make just three saves to post his first career shutout.

Rutgers-Newark taked on St. Joseph's College of Vermont in the noon opener of the St. Joseph's of New York Invitational at noon on Saturday in Patchogue, NY.  St. Joe's LI faces John Jay in the 2 p.m. second contest.  The consolation and championship matches will be half at noon and 2 o'clock on Sunday.
