Collado's Basket Lifts Rutgers-Newark Over Rowan

NEWARK, NJ – Senior point guard Angel Collado (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) tossed in a running one-hander in the lane with 3.4 seconds left to lift Rutgers-Newark to a heart-stopping, 60-59, New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rowan in The Golden Dome.

Collado, who finished with just two field goals and added five assists and five rebounds, gathered in a desperation pass from senior forward Derryck Alexander (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) who's game-high 12th rebound of the game came after junior forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) missed a 3-point jumper with a dozen ticks left.

Junior guard Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) led the Scarlet Raiders (8-6, NJAC 2-1) with 15 points and added four assists and four rebounds. Cherry finished with 11 points and nine rebounds while sophomore forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) hit six of eight shots from the floor for 13 points.

Rowan senior forward Dwayne Reevey (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven), who totaled 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, gave the Profs a 59-58 lead with 35.9 seconds left on a driving layup.

The Profs (9-4, NJAC 0-3) got 16 points, six rebounds and three steals from junior guard Kevin Darby (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) while junior guard Billy Care (Lindwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Darby attempted a last-chance desperation heave from the right side in traffic at the final buzzer, but the shot bounced high off the backboard as the final horn sounded.

Rutgers-Newark travels to New Jersey City on Wednesday for an NJAC doubleheader.  The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8.
