Senior guard Angel Collado

NEWARK, NJ – Senior point guard Angel Collado (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) knocked down the game-winning 3-point jumper with 40.1 seconds left as Rutgers-Newark escaped an upset bid by Rutgers-Camden, 44-43, in The Golden Dome.

NCAA Box Score

Rutgers-Camden sophomore guard Joshua Askew (Philadelphia, PA/Winslow Township HS) saw his driving layup down the right side of the lane fall off the far side of the rim as the final horn sounded, leaving former Raider assistant coach Brian Wischusen – now the head coach for the Raptors (3-14, NJAC 0-6) – breathlessly close to pulling off the upset.

Sophomore forward Phil Barnes (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) was the only Scarlet Raider in double figures, posting his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Rutgers-Newark (11-7, NJAC 4-2) needed them all as the team suffered through a horrific 33.3% shooting night.

Junior center Afolabi Ajumobi (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic) swatted away a career-high seven shots for Rutgers-Newark while adding eight rebounds, six points and two steals.

Junior guard Bill Banks (Berlin, NJ/Eastern) poured in 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes as Camden battled for a 22-21 lead. Raider offensive stalwarts Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) and David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic), netted just one point between them in the opening half as the Raptors forced 11 turnovers.

Barnes finished with eight points and seven rebounds while sophomore forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) worked inside for eight rebounds as Rutgers-Newark dominated the glass, 49-28.

It was the second game-winning shot in the last two weeks for Collado, who finished with seven points, three assists and three rebounds. He hit a running one-hander with 3.4 ticks left to upend Rowan, 60-59, on January 12 in The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark travels to William Paterson on Wednesday for a crucial NJAC doubleheader. The women tip off at 6 p.m. before the men square off at 8.
