MONTCLAIR, NJ – Rutgers-Newark sophomore forward Phil Barnes (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex HS) came off the bench for team-highs of a dozen points and eight rebounds, but Montclair State used double-digit scoring from five players to down the Scarlet Raiders, 78-67, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in Panzer Gym.

NCAA Box Score

Junior guard Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) tallied 10 points and pulled down six rebounds while sophomore forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) dished out a team-high four assists and hit five of eight shots from the floor on his way to 11 points. Junior forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) netted nine points to go along with three rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Raiders (7-6, NJAC 1-1) gave up their second highest point total of the season to the Red Hawks (7-6, NJAC 1-1) on the heels of yielding 83 points in a loss to Albright on Saturday. MSU shot an impressive 55.8% from the field for the contest to offset Rutgers-Newark's 37-33 edge in rebounding.

Junior forward Carlos Pena scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to fuel the Red Hawk victory.

After a see-saw first period which ended with MSU holding a 36-33 lead, senior point guard Angel Collado (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) hit a jumper to give the Raiders their only lead of the second half at 39-38 with 17:55 left. Back-to-back baskets by Pena and Ken Dudley put the Red Hawks ahead to stay at 42-39.

Pena had six points during a decisive 10-0 run, capping the spurt with a dunk, to put MSU in control, 52-41, with 12:57 remaining.

But, Rutgers-Newark stayed close, pulling to within four points when Cherry scored inside with 6:30 left to make it 61-57. That was as close as the Raiders would get, however, as the Red Hawks pulled away during the final five minutes of the contest.
