Roadrunners Shut Down Scarlet Raiders In NJAC Twinbill

Ramapo 9, Rutgers-Newark 1 & Ramapo 8, Rutgers-Newark 0

Sophomore Elena Morge

MAHWAH, NJ – Sophomore Elena Morge was the only Rutgers-Newark player with a hit in each game as Ramapo got back-to-back three-hit pitching performances on its way to a 9-1 and 8-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference sweep at the Ramapo Athletic Center.

NCAA Statistics:  Ramapo 9, R-N 1   Ramapo 8, R-N 0

Morge singled to centerfield with two out in the fourth inning of game one to plate senior second baseman Shauna Gallagher, who had reached on a lead-off single, for the Scarlet Raiders' only run of the day. A fifth-inning single by senior catcher Nikki Spampinato was the other Rutgers-Newark hit against senior righthander Katie Norton. Norton struck out four and walked just one to run her record to 8-3.

In game two, Morge doubled with two out in the first in front of a single by senior shortstop Charlotte Labate to give the Raiders their only scoring threat against freshman Deanna Giordano (6-1). But, after getting a ground ball to get out of the first, Giordano allowed only a one-out single to freshman centerfielder Jessica Zelaya the rest of the way. Zelaya was erased on a double play as the rookie pitcher faced the minimum of 12 batters over the final four innings.

The Roadrunners (25-7, NJAC 9-3), ranked 11th in the nation, totaled 17 hits in the two five-inning games with freshman outfielder Rachel Wong collecting five hits on the day.

Rutgers-Newark (4-28, NJAC 0-12) travels to St. Joseph's of Patchogue on Thursday for a 5 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
