Scarlet Raiders Fall Short At Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ – Despite a solid outing by freshman goalkeeper Kat Renteria (North Bergen, NJ/Cliffside Park), who finished with six saves, Rutgers-Newark fell to 0-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a closely contested 1-0 loss to Montclair State.

The loss, coming on the heels of a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime defeat at home to Ramapo last Saturday, is the second one goal differential for the young Scarlet Raiders squad in as many games.

Despite being outshot by the Red Hawks, 16-4, the Scarlet Raiders threatened early, when senior Shauna Gallagher (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) pushed a clear shot wide right in the tenth minute.

Freshman forward Julia Caseres (Union, NJ/Union) looked primed to put Rutgers-Newark ahead in the 40th minute with a freekick from 30 yards out, before being denied by Montclair goalkeeper Leah Tepperman.

Montclair State broke the scoreless deadlock at 49:50, when freshman forward Rachel Senyszyn netted her fifth goal of the season of off an assist by freshman Christina DeMartinis.

Despite a pair of late shots on goal by freshman Liana Abreu (Newark, NJ/Science Park) the Scarlet Raiders were unable to even the score, as the Red Hawks clung on to the smallest of margins en route to their first win in league play.

Rutgers-Newark returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 27 when it plays host to Kean at 7:00 p.m. on Alumni Field.
