Defense Keys Scarlet Raiders' Sixth Straight Victory

SEWELL, NJ – Freshman guard Jared Tactuk (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) netted 17 of her game-high 21 points in the opening half as Rutgers-Newark throttled Rutgers-Camden, 71-28, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game played at Gloucester County College.

The Scarlet Raiders (8-6, NJAC 2-1), who won their sixth straight game, also got career highs of 13 points and 15 rebounds from freshman forward Shatanay McCaskill (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) who posted her second double-double in the last three games. The rookie forward also tied senior point guard Youngor Kehleay (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) for the team lead with four assists and made three of the Raiders' 15 steals.

The Raiders scored the first 10 points of the game on their way to a 34-7 halftime edge with Tactuk hitting three of four shots from beyond the arc to fuel the offense.

Rutgers-Newark, which has now won eight of its last 10 games following an 0-4 start, held an opponent under 30 points for the third time during the winning streak. Opponents are averaging just 34.0 points per game during the run.

The Raptors (0-11, NJAC 0-3) were limited to a season-low seven field goals and made a paltry 17.9% of their shots from the floor. Rutgers-Newark forced a season-high 29 turnovers and dominated the backboards, 44-25.

Eighth-year head coach Kevin Morris went to his bench early and often as all but one Raider player scored. Kehleay and senior guard Erika Jordan (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) netted seven points apiece. Freshman forward Tamara Trotz (East Orange, NJ/East Orange) came off the bench for six rebounds while junior forward Renee Edwards (Montville, NJ/West Milford) snared six.

Freshman guard Casey Crenny paced the Raptors with 10 points and three steals while rookie forward Stephanie Deisley chipped in seven. Junior forward Kimone Smith came off the bench to lead Rutgers-Camden with six rebounds.

Rutgers-Newark visits Montclair State on Wednesday for an NJAC doubleheader.  The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 in the MSU Recreation Center.
