Late Rally Lifts Yellow Jackets Past Rutgers-Newark

BROOKLYN, NY – Junior forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic HS) powered inside for 23 points, but NYC College of Technology used a 17-8 closing run to upend the Scarlet Raiders, 73-68, in a non-conference basketball game in the Klitgord Center.

Singleton netted 14 points in the opening period to stake the Raiders to a 41-30 advantage. Rutgers-Newark (9-5) held off NYCCT until the final four minutes, taking a 60-56 lead on a fastbreak layup by sophomore guard Michael DeShields (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) with 5:17 remaining.

But a 3-point jumper by senior guard Jamaal Hall ignited a 10-0 Yellow Jacket run capped by a pair of free throws by senior guard Yvon Dantes which staked City Tech to a 66-60 lead with just 1:17 remaining. The Raiders trimmed the lead to four three times in the final minutes, but could get no closer as the Yellow Jackets (7-4) made seven of eight free throws in the final 35 seconds.  Hall drained six straight from the charity stripe in the final 15 ticks.

Junior guard James Johnson (Summit, NJ/Summit) hit five of seven shots from the floor, including two of three from beyond the arc, to notch 13 points for Rutgers-Newark while senior forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) chipped in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Freshman guard Greg Moore (Jersey City, NJ/Bayonne) tallied nine points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Hall poured in a game-high 31 points, hitting 11 of 12 from the charity stripe while senior forward Ryan Phillip added 22 points and eight rebounds. Dantes dished off four assists to go along with eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

Rutgers-Newark visits Rutgers-Camden on Saturday for a New Jersey Athletic Conference twinbill. The Scarlet Raider women face the Scarlet Raptors at 1 p.m. with the men tipping off at 3 o'clock.
