WAYNE, N.J. (October 14, 2015) – Senior
Sara Corson scored both goals to lead the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 2-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road win at William Paterson University Wednesday afternoon.
R-N improves to 3-2-1 in the conference and 12-3-1 overall, while Paterson drops to 1-4-1 in the NJAC and 3-8-2 overall. The 12 wins are tied for the most in any regular-season for Rutgers-Newark, tying last year's regular-season win total. The Scarlet Raiders finished 2014 with 14 victories, getting a pair of wins in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro/Upstate Championship.
Rutgers-Newark is also unbeaten in its last five matches (4-0-1), outscoring the opposition 14-5 over that time period.
Corson put Rutgers-Newark ahead for good (2-1) at 55:37, cleaning up her own rebound off William Paterson keeper Kat Clint who made a save on the original attempt. The veteran now has 19 goals on the season, including eight game-winners which ties her for first in the nation.
William Paterson jumped out to an early lead, getting a goal at 3:10 when junior Amanda Carmichael cleaned up a header that had traveled across the face of the goal. It was her third score of the season, and sophomore Rachel Rivell pocked the assist on the play.
Senior back
Julie Dantoni took the Raiders' first shot of the match in the 13th minute, and she assisted Corson's 18th goal of the season at 21:32. Dantoni chipped in to Corson who did the rest, adding to her league-lead in points and goals and assuring Dantoni would record her third assist of '15.
William Paterson generated a corner kick in the 31st minute but did not take another shot after its goal in the fourth minute. Overall, the Scarlet Raiders controlled the run of play and possession, finishing the opening period with a 7-1 edge in shots, putting two on target. The Pioneers ended the first with a 3-0 margin in corners.
Paterson's first shot since 3:10 came 49:02 later at 52:12, and after an attempt at 54:56, the Rutgers-Newark defense did not allow another for the final 35:04 of action.
Rutgers finished the game with a 15-3 margin in shots, putting nine on goal as Clint was forced to make seven saves. Paterson held a slim 3-2 edge in corners, with sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho earning her 12th win of the season despite not needing to make a save.
R-N forced Clint to make three saves on three shots in a span of 1:11 around the 70th minute but could not extend its lead, eventually settling on the 2-1 final. The Raiders, who lost their first two NJAC matches of the season, have bounced back nicely, and now have 10 points in the standings and control their own destiny in terms of an NJAC playoff berth and seeding with three conference games left on the schedule.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday night when it hosts Kean University in a key conference showdown. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Field.
