Rutgers-Camden Trips Women’s Soccer, 2-1

CAMDEN, N.J. (October 24, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team was defeated by Rutgers University-Camden, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 12-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the NJAC, while Camden improves to 5-8-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference. The Scarlet Raiders have one more conference match left in the 2015 season, hosting Montclair State University Wednesday night on Alumni Field in what could be for a chance at an NJAC Tournament berth.

Rutgers-Newark dominated the first half of play, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room after holding a 15-4 margin in shots. Overall, the Scarlet Raiders ended with a 23-13 edge in shots, putting five on goal compared to nine on target for Camden. The Scarlet Raptors held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

R-N held the hosts without a shot for the first 19:40 of game time, taking six of its own and jumping out to a 1-0 lead when freshman Juliana Ceballos scored her fifth goal of the season at 18:31. The rookie controlled a loose ball outside the top-left of the penalty box and banged home a high bid to get her team on the scoreboard. It was her first goal and points since a one goal, two assist performance against New Jersey City University back on October 3.

Senior Sara Corson nearly gave the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 lead when her shot clanged off the crossbar in the 28th minute, and two minutes later an attempt from classmate Cristina Estremera was saved by Katie Gurba to keep it a one-goal match.

Just 5:12 into the second half, Rutgers-Camden pulled even after a shot from Catherine Fiore hit the post, deflecting to Kelly Barbone who tallied her fourth goal of the season.

Each team generated chances over the next 20 minutes, with Camden getting a penalty kick at 77:03 for an opportunity at the lead. Scarlet Raider goalkeeper Diana Carvalho was up to the task on the PK, coming up with a monster save to keep things tied at one.

Corson hit the crossbar again at 83:37 and on the ensuing counter, R-C took the lead for good when Amber Cobb scored her second of the season after a cross.

Carvalho finished with seven saves in the loss, while Gurba made four to earn the win.

Wednesday's match against Montclair St. is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start from Alumni Field, and prior to the contest Rutgers-Newark will honor its senior class.
