EWING, N.J. (November 3, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team saw its run in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament Championship end on Tuesday night at the hands of The College of New Jersey. The Lions won the semifinal match by a 5-0 final.
After making the conference tournament for the second time in program history, R-N was able to get its first-ever NJAC Tournament win, upsetting No. 23 and third-seeded Montclair St., 1-0, Saturday at MSU Soccer Park. On Tuesday, the Lions – who were ranked nationally for much of the 2015 season – proved to be too much for the Scarlet Raiders, scoring in the 15th minute and two times early in the second to put R-N in a tough spot.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 13-8-1 overall and will now await the release of NCAA and ECAC Tournament brackets Monday for its next matchup. TCNJ advances to play in the NJAC final at top-seeded Rowan University who defeated Stockton University by a 1-0 final Tuesday as well. TCNJ is now 12-2-4 overall.
The Lions' first strike was from sophomore Jessica Goldman, making a move to cut back and tucking a left-footed shot just under the crossbar in the upper-left corner from 27-yards out.
The R-N defense played well for the reminder of the opening period, keeping the Lions off the board over the final 30-plus minutes of the period.
Senior
Sara Corson – who was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year Tuesday morning – took the Scarlet Raiders' first shot of the match, putting a bid from 30-yards out wide left.
The Lions scored at 53:05 and again 1:41 later for a 3-0 lead and later in the half converted a penalty-kick chance into the fourth marker of the night. Junior Lauren Malajian and freshman Arielle Curtis had goals two and three with junior Marissa Scognamiglio recording both assists. Sophomore Abigail Emmert tallied the penalty kick, with the fifth and final marker coming from freshman Kate Galgano.
TCNJ ended the contest with a 22-1 edge in shots and a 6-1 margin in corners. TCNJ put 14 of its shots on target, forcing R-N senior goalkeeper
Veronika Tueros to make nine saves in the match. Tueros earned starts in the last three matches for the Scarlet Raiders, totaling 21 stops in 270 minutes.
