GLASSBORO, N.J. (April 25, 2015) – The seventh-ranked Rowan University softball team defeated Rutgers-Newark in both games of a doubleheader Saturday to close out New Jersey Athletic Conference play for the Scarlet Raiders.
The Profs won game one, 6-0, and took game two by the same score.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 5-13 in the conference and 16-20 overall, also seeing its five-game winning streak snapped. Rowan improves to 33-4 overall and 14-4 in the NJAC.
Game 1Junior Beth Ann Hyland was the story in the opener, throwing a no-hitter to pick up her 15th win of the season. She faced 22 Raiders, retiring seven on strikes and missing the perfect game on an error.
Freshman
Kelly Yusko took the loss (10-8) in the circle for R-N, giving up 10 hits and six runs (five earned). The Raider rookie walked three and struck out a pair.
The Profs were able to score single runs in the first and second, before plating a pair in the third and fourth for the final margin.
Junior
Kelsey Lucas reached base for Rutgers-Newark and tallied a stolen base, but was not able to cross the plate.
Shortstop Shilah Snead and second baseman Alysa Romero had two and three hits, respectively, with Romero homering and driving in a pair for Rowan.
Game 2In the nightcap, three Rowan pitchers shut down a tough Raiders offense, this time allowing just two hits.
Sophomore third baseman
Anna Carlson doubled for the Raiders, and Yusko singled, with pitcher
Morgan Walizer working out a walk. The Carlson double came in the sixth, and the Yusko single came in the first, but the best chance for the Raiders was in the top of the fifth when Walizer walked and
Nikki Sammartino reached on an error to put runners at first and second with one out. The next two Raiders were retired though, and Rutgers remained scoreless.
Rowan's big inning was the second, as the hosts scored five times on four hits. Left fielder Mia Baldassari and catcher Alyssa Sims led a nine-hit Rowan attack in game two with five combined hits.
Walizer took the loss in the second game, dropping to 5-6 on the season. She allowed six runs (just one earned) on nine hits.
The Scarlet Raiders will return to action with a pair of road games at New York University Sunday afternoon. The opener is set for a 4 p.m. start.
