NEWARK, N.J. (September 26, 2015) – The Rowan University women's soccer team defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 2-1 Saturday night at Alumni Field in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game.
Rutgers-Newark scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Scarlet Raiders could not hold on, eventually falling by the 2-1 final.
Rowan improves to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 on the conference. Rutgers-Newark sees its two-match winning streak snapped, falling to 8-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the NJAC
Rutgers-Newark nearly took a 1-0 lead just 69 seconds in after senior
Sara Corson received a centering pass from sophomore
Nicole Gomez and blasted a one-timer that forced Prof goalkeeper Shelby Money to make a diving save. Money was able to get just enough of the ball to keep it out of her net in what turned out to be a key play in the match.
That one-timer early foreshadowed the eventual Scarlet Raider score in the 25th minute from senior
Cristina Estremera. Corson controlled an airborne pass at the top of the box, calmly turning away from the goal before touching back to Estremera who absolutely blasted a one-timer, depositing a perfect shot into the upper-left 90 for her fifth score of the season. Corson was credited with her first assist of the year on the play.
The first half as a whole saw most of the action take place between the penalty boxes. Rowan held an 8-4 edge in shots, but the Scarlet Raiders scored the one goal and had the great early chance. The Profs also ended the first with a 1-0 margin in corner kicks.
The second period was a different story as Rowan was able to wrestle control away from the Scarlet Raiders. Sophomore goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho was tested early, making three fantastic saves to keep Rowan off the board, swatting away a rocket, deflecting a shot when she was one-on-one with the Rowan attacker and pushing a free kick up and over the crossbar.
The Profs eventually broke through at 65:04 when Megan Carchidi scored her first of the season, receiving a pass, touching several times before cutting back against the grain taking a hitting shot that eventually went in on a deflection.
The game-winner came with 13:23 on the clock, when veteran Maxine New took a through-ball and tucked a perfect shot inside the near post. It was her third goal of the year.
Carvalho played well for R-N in goal, making seven saves in a losing effort. Rowan finished with a 14-6 margin in shots and a 3-1 edge in corners.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action looking for its first conference win when the Raiders visit Ramapo College Wednesday afternoon (3 p.m.).
