Cortland Trips Women’s Soccer in Wilkes Tourney Finale

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (September 6, 2015) – SUNY Cortland scored two second-half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team, 2-1, Sunday in the finale of the Wilkes University Tournament.

Despite the loss to Cortland, Rutgers-Newark ended a challenging first week of the season with a record of 2-1-0, playing all three matches away from the friendly confines of Alumni Field. The Scarlet Raiders will open the home portion of their schedule Wednesday night when they host the College of Staten Island at 7:30 p.m.

The Scarlet Raiders took five shots in each half – 10 for the match – putting eight on goal and forcing Cortland goalkeeper Rachel Axt to make seven saves to earn the win. Sophomore Diana Carvalho made four saves for the R-N cause, seeing 17 total shots – six of which were on target.

"I thought we put in a great effort in two tough battles this weekend," said head coach Ariana Ruela. "A lack of concentration and organization allowed Cortland to come back today, but the results are definitely something we can build on."

The Scarlet Raiders played a strong first half and a solid 90 minutes overall, taking a 1-0 advantage with 1:03 left in the opening period when junior midfielder Raquel DaCosta scored her first of the season. The goal followed a stretch in which the Scarlet Raiders generated two corners and a shot on goal from sophomore forward Haley Savva.

R-N ended the first with a 4-2 edge in corners, leading that category 6-3 at the end of the contest.

Cortland pulled even 4:01 into the second half on a shot that went in with the help of a deflection, and earned the game-winner in the 79th minute on a well-placed bid from Brenna Conover.

After the Red Dragons (2-1-0) scored, the Scarlet Raiders played well, creating two corners and putting two shots on goal. Senior midfielder Cristina Estremera forced Axt to make a save at 83:35, and senior midfielder Sara Corson did the same with 2:02 on the clock following a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Nicole Gomez.

The Scarlet Raiders have three matches next week, home against CSI and then in Massachusetts for road battles at Babson College and Wellesley College (Saturday and Sunday).
