Roadrunners Down Women’s Basketball in NJAC Tilt

NEWARK, N.J. (January 13, 2016) - Ramapo College defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 66-52 Wednesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's basketball game in The Golden Dome Arena.

Senior guard Arianna Williams scored a game-high 20 points for the Scarlet Raiders, adding six rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Maria Simmons had 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, dishing out a team-high five assists and getting a pair of thefts as well. Reserve guard Tia Taylor led the Scarlet Raider reserves with eight points, hitting a pair of three-pointers and grabbing three rebounds in a career-high 25 minutes.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the NJAC with the loss, while Ramapo moves to 2-6 in the conference and 4-11 overall. The Scarlet Raiders will look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they visit Rowan University in an NJAC clash.

After a tight first quarter, Ramapo ran off seven-straight points to open a 23-13 advantage, and a three-pointer from junior guard Shelby Ringer pushed the guests' lead to 14 with a little more than five minutes to play in the half.

Taylor helped the Raiders get back in it, hitting two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, and a pair at the line from Williams made it a six-point game with 3:47 on the clock. The two teams did not score for the remainder of the half and went into the break with the score 28-22 in favor of the Roadrunners.

The Scarlet Raiders fought back within four points at several junctures in the third, but a 14-4 run for Ramapo helped the Roadrunners match their largest lead of the night (14) and sent the game into the fourth quarter with the score 47-33.

Ramapo extended the lead to 17 points in the opening moments of the fourth, with junior guard Shala Glenn scoring four-straight points to help pull the Scarlet Raiders back within 11 with 6:16 to go. The lead would move back to 16 before a Simmons jumper and Williams triple trimmed the edge to 11, but that would be as close as the Scarlet Raiders could get.

Ramapo shot 20-for-43 (46.5 percent) from the field, 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) from three and 20-for-24 (83.3 percent) from the line. The Roadrunners held a 38-37 margin on the glass and assisted on 15-of-20 made baskets. Ramapo was led by 16 points from junior forward Kellie Lane, and 10 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Alyson Oostdyk.

The Scarlet Raiders shot 21-for-69 (30.4 percent) from the floor, 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) from deep and 6-for-12 at the line. R-N tallied 10 assists and four steals in the game, scoring 15 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds.

Sophomore forward Nicole Skelly had four points and eight boards, and Glenn had six points for R-N.

Williams now has 20 or more points in 10 games this season, including seven of her last eight games. Simmons' double-double is her fourth of the season.
