Arianna Williams scored 21 points and junior guard
Shala Glenn had 13 points and five steals, but the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team suffered a 62-50 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss to Montclair State University Wednesday night in the Panzer Athletic Center.
The Scarlet Raiders (6-12 overall, 2-9 NJAC) opened an 18-13 lead after one and trailed by just three points entering the fourth, but the Red Hawks (12-6 overall, 8-3 NJAC) buckled down on defense in the fourth to earn the 12-point conference victory.
Williams had six rebounds and three steals en route to her 21 points, with Glenn grabbing five caroms and tallying a pair of assists to go with her 13 points and five thefts. Junior guard
Maria Simmons had seven points, five boards, three steals and two assists, and sophomore forward
Nikki Sammartino tallied five points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard
Nicole Skelly grabbed a team-high-tying six boards and recorded four points.
R-N shot 19-for-56 (33.9 percent) from the field, 3-for-14 from three-point range and 9-for-13 from the line (69.2 percent), racking up 13 steals, four assists (17 turnovers) and 30 rebounds.
Rutgers-Newark raced out to an 11-0 lead, getting a pair of buckets from Simmons and one apiece from Glenn, Sammartino and Skelly, but the hosts responded with an 11-0 rally to tie the game with 3:20 remaining in the period.
R-N closed the first on a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead into the second, but MSU came back and built its lead, going on top 31-23 and taking a 33-25 advantage into the intermission.
The Red Hawks quickly pushed the lead to 10 in the opening moments of the second half, but the Scarlet Raiders hung around before roaring back to tie the game at 39 with a 10-0 run featuring five points from Williams and four points from Glenn.
Montclair St. was able to regain control with a 4-0 mini-run late in the period, and after a Simmons layup pulled the guests within one 54 ticks into the final stanza, MSU closed the game on a 17-6 run to earn the triumph.
Sophomore forward Katie Sire and junior guard Rachael Krauss each had double-doubles for MSU, combining for 36 points and 22 rebounds. Montclair finished the game with eight steals, 15 assists and 41 rebounds (plus-11), shooting 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor, 50 percent (10-for-20) from three and 71.4 percent (10-for-14) at the charity stripe.
Williams now has scored 20 or more points in 12 different games for the Scarlet Raiders and her three three-pointers give her 57 for the season. The veteran Scarlet Raider also has 64 steals and 20 blocked shots.
