NEWARK, N.J. (October 26, 2016) – Junior
Haley Savva scored her first goal of the season thanks to an assist from sophomore
Juliana Ceballos but it was not enough as the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team dropped its 2016 finale to New Jersey Athletic Conference rival William Paterson University, 3-1.
Prior to the contest, Rutgers-Newark honored its two seniors playing for the final time on the Alumni Field turf in
Victoria Benet and
Raquel DaCosta.
Paterson improves to 13-4-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raiders end their season at 1-14-2 overall and 0-9-0 in the league.
Rutgers-Newark controlled possession and the run of play for most of the opening 45, but it was the Pioneers that took a 1-0 lead into halftime with Marisa Adelman's 18th goal of the season. On the play senior Sidney Gabrich crossed to Adelman who chipped her shot up an in for the score.
Ceballos created several solid chances for the Scarlet Raiders in the first half as R-N ended the period with a 6-2 edge in shots and a 4-1 margin in corners.
Late in the period, Newark created an opportunity after a corner, but DaCosta's shot from the top-right of the box sailed just wide and Paterson was able to maintain a 1-0 lead at the break.
DaCosta and Ceballos each had solid looks early in the second, with the latter forcing a Pioneer save after a long through-ball from junior
Nicole Gomez.
Moments later, Paterson scored two insurance markers 3:36 apart and both came via the set piece. The first was a service into the box after a Newark foul as sophomore Darcy Perez found junior Diana Perez, and the second was on a corner that senior Tori Woetzel headed in.
Rutgers-Newark scored at 61:02 when Savva found the back of the net for the first time this season with a laser of a shot from the top-right corner of the 18-yard box. Ceballos had the ball at the top of the box and cut back before sliding a pass to Savva who stepped back and delivered a perfectly struck shot inside the upper-right corner.
Newark battled through the final horn, consistently finding ways to generate corners and solid runs, but the Raiders were unable to pull any closer, eventually falling by the 3-1 final.
R-N ended the match with a 12-10 edge in shots and a 7-4 margin in corner kicks. The Pioneers ended with a 6-5 lead in shots on target, with R-N goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho making three saves in the contest.
