MAHWAH, N.J. (February 17, 2016) - Senior guard
Arianna Williams scored her 1,000th career point and poured in a game-high 27 points to lead the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team to a 67-57 win over Ramapo College Wednesday night at the Bradley Center in the Scarlet Raiders' 2015-16 season finale.
Williams becomes the sixth player in program history to score 1,000 points and the veteran standout finishes her Rutgers-Newark career with 1,018 as she entered her career finale needing nine points for the milestone.
The highlight of a tight first half was a Williams three-pointer that gave her 1,001 tallies with 4:27 on the clock. The triple gave the Scarlet Raiders a 26-24 lead at the time and Williams 10 points in the half.
Rutgers-Newark finishes its season 8-17 overall and 4-14 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Ramapo falls to 5-20 overall and 3-15 in the conference.
Williams' 27 came on 10-of-22 shooting and 4-of-5 from three-point range, grabbing seven rebounds and picking up two assists, two blocks and a steal. Junior Shala Glenn ended her season strong, scoring 17 points (7-for-10), five rebounds, three steals and two helpers, and junior guard Maria Simmons had 12 points, seven assists and five boards. Sophomore guard Nicole Skelly had nine points, six rebounds and two steals.
After falling behind by five points early in the third quarter, the Scarlet Raiders took control with an 11-0 rally to open a 44-38 lead with 2:42 left in the period. A Simmons layup started things and four-straight Williams tallies gave the Raiders a 39-38 lead. A Glenn layup and triple from Skelly ended the spurt as the Roadrunners were able to get back within two points heading into the fourth.
Back-to-back jumpers from Williams and Simmons to start the fourth pushed the Newark lead to six, and after Ramapo came back to get within three, back-to-back jumpers from Williams and Glenn upped the Raider advantage to seven with 6:48 on the clock.
A Williams three-pointer helped Rutgers-Newark to a 10-point lead (60-50) with 5:18 on the clock, but the Roadrunners would not go away quietly, getting within four points with 1:25 to go. Williams answered for the Scarlet Raiders, hitting a huge jump shot, and after a stop, two Simmons free throws all but locked up the win.
Rutgers-Newark shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from three and 8-for-9 at the line, grabbing 31 rebounds, dishing out 11 assists (just 11 turnovers) and recording six steals. The Roadrunners shot 38.8 percent (19-for-49) from the floor, 40 percent (6-for-15) from three and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) at the line, totaling 33 rebounds, 13 assists, seven blocks and five thefts.
Williams' first three of the game helped the Scarlet Raiders to an 11-7 edge with 3:18 left in the opening quarter, and a jumper from sophomore forward
Nikki Sammartino pushed the margin to five (13-8).
Back-to-back jumpers from Simmons and Skelly gave the Scarlet Raiders a 17-10 lead early in the second, but a 10-0 Roadrunner run made it 20-19 Ramapo with 7:01 left in the half.
The two teams would go back-and-forth the rest of the first half, and Ramapo eventually took a 31-28 lead into intermission.
