Softball Clipped By FDU-Florham and Babson in Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 13, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark softball team suffered two defeats on the second day of its Florida Spring Break Trip Sunday, falling to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 10-1, and Babson College, 6-2.

The Scarlet Raiders drop to 1-5 on the young season, and will take Monday off before returning to action Tuesday with single contests against Clarkson University and Becker College.

Game 1 - FDU-Florham 10, Rutgers-Newark 1
FDU jumped on top 3-0 with three scores in the first, and the Scarlet Raiders could not recover, falling by the 10-1 final in six innings.

The Scarlet Raiders held FDU off the board in the second and third innings, scoring one of their own to make it a 3-1 game in the third on a Yusko solo home run. Rutgers-Newark added two more hits with two outs in the third, but could not get another to fight any closer.

FDU pushed across four runs on five hits in the fourth inning to go on top 7-1, and the Devils retired the Raiders in order in the fifth and sixth before ending the game with three runs in their half of the sixth inning.

Rutgers-Newark had four hits in the game - one from Yusko (1-for-3, HR), two from sophomore Morgan Walizer (2-for-3) and one from freshman Liesel Johnson (1-for-3).

FDU totaled its 10 runs on 12 hits as five Devils totaled two or more in the game.

Walizer suffered the loss in the circle for the Scarlet Raiders, dropping to 0-2 on the season, while senior Sydney Worek went the distance to earn the win for FDU.

Game 2 - Babson 6, Rutgers-Newark 2
The Beavers took a 3-0 edge after three thanks to a single run in the first and two more in the top half of the third inning.

Yusko's third home run in three games pulled Rutgers-Newark within one after four full innings, but Babson scored three in the fifth to close the scoring.

Sophomore Sam Held started the bottom of the fourth with a single for the Scarlet Raiders, and Yusko was next, connecting on her third round tripper of the year. After an out, Johnson walked and Walizer reached on an error to make it two on and one out, but Babson retired the side to remain in front.

Rutgers-Newark finished with three hits in the game. Yusko went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, while Held went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Johnson finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

Yusko took the loss for in the circle for the Scarlet Raiders, going five innings and allowing six earned runs with four strikeouts. Walizer went the final two, allowing no runs and just one hit.

Babson totaled nine hits, including a 4-for-4, three-run performance from sophomore Samantha Smith.

NOTES:
- Kelly Yusko now has three home runs in her last three games - one each against New England College, FDU-Florham and Babson.
- Liesel Johnson (three) and Kelly Yusko (five) are the current Scarlet Raiders with hitting streaks.
- Sam Held is the only Scarlet Raider this season with a three-hit game.
