CLERMONT, Fla. (March 16, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark softball team swept its final two games in Florida, defeating Stevenson University, 2-1, in the opener and dropping Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 5-2.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 4-6 overall and closes its '16 Spring Break on a three-game winning streak. The Scarlet Raiders went 4-4 overall during the road trip and will welcome Swarthmore College to Alumni Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a double header.
Sophomore
Kelly Yusko led the Scarlet Raiders in the circle, earning a pair of victories, and sophomore
Morgan Walizer tallied four hits on the day.
Rutgers-Newark 2, Stevenson 1After the Mustangs tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Rutgers-Newark answered with the game-winning marker in the bottom half. Walizer singled to lead off the inning, and Yusko game up with a clutch RBI double.
Yusko then did the rest in the circle, working around an error and a single in the sixth with two strikeouts, and a lone baserunner in the seventh. The second-year Raider earned the win, going seven superb frames for the Raiders, working in and out of trouble and stranding 11 mustangs on the bases. She scattered nine hits and struck out five.
Freshman
Samantha Hoffman keyed the first Scarlet Raider run of the game in the second inning, leading off with a single and scoring on a two-out base knock from Walizer.
From an offensive standpoint, the Scarlet Raiders totaled nine hits in the game and were led by three hits - including the game-winner - from Yusko (3-for-3, RBI). Walizer was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Hoffman went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Hoffman, freshman

Rutgers-Newark 5, MCLA 2After MCLA went on top with one in the first inning, the Scarlet Raiders went ahead for good in the bottom half, scoring twice. Sophomore
Elizabeth Marflak walked and scored, and senior
Kelsey Lucas crossed the plate after reaching on an error. Yusko drove in one with a single and freshman
Liesel Johnson brought home another with a groundout.
Rutgers-Newark picked up an insurance run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.
Gallo walked to open the fifth, and eventually scored (Marflak RBI).
In the sixth, Walizer was in the thick of things, recording her fourth hit of the day. Hoffman walked to set the table, and came in to score on a two-out single from Gallo. Walizer then plated Gallo to cap the scoring and give the Scarlet Raider defense some breathing room.
Yusko picked up her second win of the season, tossing a strong six innings, and Walizer recorded the final three outs to lock up the victory. Yusko allowed an unearned run on three hits and struck out four, also going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Walizer was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Scarlet Raiders totaled four hits in the game and drew five walks.
