UNION, N.J. (April 10, 2016) – William Paterson University swept Rutgers University-Newark in a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference softball games Sunday.
The Scarlet Raiders drop to 1-5 in the league and 9-13 overall, while William Paterson improves to 18-4 overall and 4-2 in NJAC play.
Sophomore
Kelly Yusko tallied two multi-hit games and went 6-for-7 on the day with an RBI and sophomore
Kayla Gallo had a huge second game with a home run, a double and six RBI. Sophomore
Morgan Walizer recorded a hit in each game for the Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action Tuesday at Ramapo College, looking to snap a four-game skid.
William Paterson 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 – Game 1 (5 inn.)Pioneer starter Allison Podmajersky fired a complete-game three-hitter in the opener as the Pioneers picked up a comfortable victory. Yusko went 2-for-2 for the Scarlet Raiders at the plate, and Walizer had the other hit. Freshman
Brittany Robertson was the fourth Newark baserunner of the game, working a walk.
Paterson scored three runs in the first, two in both the second and fourth and one in the fifth for the final margin. Podmajersky improved to 11-2 on the season, while Yusko dropped to 8-8 with four innings in the circle.
William Paterson 10, Rutgers-Newark 9 – Game 2 (8 inn.)After seeing the opener end after just five innings, Rutgers-Newark and William Paterson went extras in the nightcap.
R-N led throughout the contest, going on top 3-0 after scoring three times in the third. The lead moved to 7-2 in the fifth, but the hosts scored five runs in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.
Yusko doubled home sophomore
Elizabeth Marflak who was placed on second to start the eighth inning, and a bunt single from freshman
Liesel Johnson made it 9-7 in favor of the Raiders. Paterson did not quit, and came back with three runs on three hits and an error. Designated player Salina Pellios delivered the game-winning hit with two outs.
Podmajersky earned the win, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) in 3.2 innings of relief. Yusko took the loss, going all 7.2 innings for the Scarlet Raiders.
Gallo's homer went for a grand slam in the fifth inning, clearing the fence in left-center and bringing home Robertson, freshman
Samantha Hoffman and sophomore
Sam Held. The second-year Raider drove in 2-of-3 runs they scored in the third with a single.
Rutgers-Newark had 12 hits in the second contest, getting four from Yusko (4-for-5, RBI), two from Held (2-for-4, two runs), two from Johnson (2-for-4, RBI, R) and Gallo's 2-for-4 with a run scored and six RBI.
