MAHWAH, N.J. (April 14, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark and Ramapo College softball teams each scored one run in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon as each side picked up a victory via a 1-0 final.
Ramapo took the opener 1-0 with a run in the first inning, but the Scarlet Raiders answered in winning the second game by the same score. R-N moves to 12-14 overall and 2-6 in the conference with the split, and Ramapo is now 15-9 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action Saturday when the Scarlet Raiders host The College of New Jersey at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders pounded out 10 hits in the second game, but scored the game's only run in the seventh inning when sophomore
Morgan Walizer singled through the right side on a 2-2 count to drive in sophomore
Kayla Gallo.
Ramapo 1, Rutgers-Newark 0 – Game 1The Roadrunners scored the only run of the game in the bottom half of the first inning on a two-out double off the bat of Melissa Moreno, earning a 1-0 shutout victory in the opener. Sophomore pitcher Katrina Buczkowski earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits and striking out four Scarlet Raiders.
Sophomore
Kelly Yusko went the first four innings for the Scarlet Raiders, giving up five hits and striking out two. She was charged with one earned run and falls to 9-10 on the season. Sophomore
Morgan Walizer relieved Yusko and tossed two solid innings for the Raiders, giving up just one hit and striking out one. To that point, Walizer had not allowed a run in her last eight innings and had given up just one hit during that time.
Senior shortstop
Kelsey Lucas went 2-for-3 at the plate, as did freshman center fielder
Samantha Hoffman. Freshman designated player
Liesel Johnson doubled and sophomore second baseman
Kayla Gallo picked up the other Scarlet Raider hit.
Gallo and Hoffman singled in the top of the seventh to put two on with just one out, but Buczkowski was able to retire the next two Raiders to earn the win.
Rutgers-Newark 1, Ramapo 0 – Game 2After 12-straight zeros went on the scoreboard over the first six innings – six per side – Rutgers-Newark scored the run it needed in the seventh thanks to Walizer's single. Gallo doubled to lead off the inning, and was sacrificed to third nicely by freshman
Brittany Robertson in front of Walizer's big base hit. Sophomore
Elizabeth Marflak singled later in the inning, but R-N was unable to add on and took a 1-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh.
Walizer – who threw a no-hitter Wednesday and allowed just one hit in two innings of work in the opener – went to the circle for her second inning of relief, and she successfully navigated around a lead off single to lock up the NJAC road win (3-3).
Yusko worked the first five innings for Rutgers-Newark, allowing just three hits and a walk. For the doubleheader, Yusko tossed 10 innings and allowed just a single run. Walizer totaled four innings and has not allowed a run in her last 10 innings.
Gallo had two hits (2-for-3, 2B) in the second game to lead the offense, scoring a run as well, with Walizer (1-for-2, RBI), Marflak, Lucas, Yusko, Johnson (2B), sophomore
Sam Held, Hoffman and Robertson all picking up one apiece as everyone in the Scarlet Raider lineup tallied a knock.
NOTE: Rutgers-Newark pitching (Yusko and Walizer) put up zeros over the final 11 frames Thursday and have allowed just two runs in the last 23 innings as the team is 3-1 over that span.
