Stockton Sweeps Softball in NJAC Action

POMONA, N.J. (April 24, 2016) – Stockton University topped Rutgers University-Newark in both ends of a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday. The Ospreys won the opener 9-0, before taking the nightcap, 5-1.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 4-10 in the conference and 16-18 overall, while the Ospreys improve to 27-9 overall and 10-4 in the NJAC.

R-N returns to action Tuesday with a league doubleheader at New Jersey City University. The opener is set for a 3 p.m. start in Jersey City.

Senior Kelsey Lucas paced the offense, picking up a walk in the opener, and going 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk in the second game. The veteran drove in the lone Raider run.

Stockton 9, Rutgers-Newark 0 – Game 1
Each starting pitcher – sophomore Kelly Yusko for the Scarlet Raiders and senior Samantha Shockey for the Ospreys – matched zeroes for the first two innings, but the hosts took the upper hand with four runs in the third inning.

The Ospreys added five runs in the fourth inning for the final margin.

Yusko went the first three innings for Newark, and sophomore Morgan Walizer tossed the fourth.

Rutgers-Newark finished the game with a pair of hits, getting a double from sophomore Sam Held (1-for-2) and a single from sophomore Kayla Gallo. Lucas and freshman Samantha Hoffman each drew a pair of walk for the Raiders.

Stockton finished with 16 hits in the opener, getting multiple hits from six different players. Sophomore Alexa Massa went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while junior Holly Arentowicz and freshman Casey Schieda had three hits each.

Stockton 5, Rutgers-Newark 1 – Game 2
The Scarlet Raiders went on top 1-0 after the top half of the first inning in the second game as sophomore Elizabeth Marflak reached on an error and came around to score when Lucas tripled to right-center.

An RBI single from Shockey tied the game at one in the bottom half of the first, and neither team was able to score again until the Ospreys pushed across four in the fourth for the final margin. Again it was Shockey delivering the blow, tallying a two-run single.

Lucas and Yusko both singled in the fifth, and a pair of walks put two runners on in the sixth, but the pitching and defense of Stockton held the Scarlet Raiders off the board for the remainder of the contest.

Rutgers-Newark picked up seven hits in game two, getting two from Lucas and two from Yusko (2-for-4). Freshman Liesel Johnson, Hoffman (1-for-2, BB) and Gallo all had one.

Shockey went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Stockton offense, and freshman Victoria Trop earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Yusko pitched a complete-game for the Scarlet Raiders, allowing two earned runs (five total) on 11 hits. The second-year Raider falls to 12-13 on the season.
