NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 29, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark softball team has a new program wins record. The Scarlet Raiders swept Albertus Magnus by scores of 11-1 and 4-2 Friday in New Haven, Conn., improving to 20-18 overall and guaranteeing themselves at least a .500 season for the first time in the program's history.
The Scarlet Raiders pounded out 15 hits in the opener, getting multiple knocks from six different players, and they scored three times in the fifth inning of the nightcap to break a 1-1 tie.
Rutgers-Newark will close its regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Scarlet Raiders host New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Rowan University. In between games, R-N will honor senior
Kelsey Lucas as part of its annual Senior Day celebration.
Albertus Magnus falls to 20-14 with the two losses.
Rutgers-Newark 11, Albertus 1 – Game 1
Sophomore
Kelly Yusko tossed three innings of one-hit ball to pick up her 14th win of the season (14-13), striking out four, and sophomore
Morgan Walizer went the final two frames, allowing one run on one hit.
Freshman
Liesel Johnson led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore
Kayla Gallo went 1-for-2 with a team-high four RBI. Sophomore
Elizabeth Marflak (2-for-3, RBI, R, BB), Lucas (2-for-3), sophomore
Sam Held (2-for-3, 2R), freshman
Samantha Hoffman (2-for-3, 2R, RBI) and Walizer (2-for-3, 2R, RBI) all had multiple hits for the Scarlet Raiders. Every Rutgers-Newark player had at least one hit, one run scored or an RBI in the five innings.
Rutgers-Newark took control in the first inning with five runs. Johnson and Hoffman had run-scoring hits in front of a bases clearing triple from Gallo.
Marflak doubled in a run in the second, and Gallo was credited with her fourth RBI of the game after walking with the bases loaded in the fifth. The Scarlet Raiders would go on to score four more runs in fifth, settling on 11 for the shortened contest. Freshman
Brittany Robertson picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, Walizer plated Hoffman with a single, Lucas walked with the bases loaded (RBI) and Yusko picked up a sacrifice fly.
Rutgers-Newark 4, Albertus 2 – Game 2
Sophomore
Morgan Walizer improved to 6-4 on the season, tossing six innings of six-hit ball, allowing one earned run and striking out three. Yusko tossed the first inning, giving up a run on a walk and a hit with two strikeouts.
It was Albertus Magnus taking an early 1-0 lead in the second game, but the Scarlet Raiders came back to tie things up in the third. Gallo singled to lead off, advancing all the way to third on a throwing error and scoring on a base hit from Walizer.
Walizer continued putting up zeros, allowing her team to take control with a three-spot in the fifth. The second-year Scarlet Raider keyed the rally with a one-out single, and she scored on a Marflak double. After a single from Lucas, Yusko hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Marflak, and Lucas crossed on an error for the final Scarlet Raider run of the night.
The hosts scored one in the seventh, to get within two runs, but it was too little too late as the Scarlet Raiders picked up their 20th win of the season.
Gallo went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Walizer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run to lead an 11-hit attack. Every Scarlet Raider batter tallied at least one hit in the game.
