Women’s Soccer Falls in Tournament Finale

NEWARK, N.J. (September 11, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team was defeated by a score of 4-0 by Shenandoah University Sunday in the finale of the 2016 Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field.

R-N drops to 1-4-0 on the season, while Shenandoah University improves to 4-1-0. Swarthmore College won the tournament title with a shutout of Frostburg State University in Sunday's first match, and Garnet senior Miranda Saldivar was named the MVP.

Newark will look to get back into the win column Wednesday night when it hosts Widener University in a non-conference showdown on Alumni Field. It will be the team's final tuneup before New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play begins Saturday against Rutgers University-Camden.

Shenandoah controlled possession and field position for most of the contest, ending with a 15-7 margin in shots. Each side created five corners.

The guests took a 1-0 lead when senior Anna Wilson took a pass from sophomore Danesha Cottoms and put her shot in the upper-left corner. Shenandoah went on top 2-0 in the 37th minute when freshman Emily Yergin converted a penalty kick, and the lead moved to three when freshman Jessica Stuart found sophomore Jordan Riser for a tally 4:23 before intermission.

After the break, Shenandoah put in the final tally of the game as Stuart led Yergin on a breakaway. The tally was the sixth of the year for Yergin.

Freshman Heidi Paulson started in goal for Rutgers-Newark and made three saves. Junior Diana Carvalho came on in the second half, stopping two shots.

Freshman Shayna Bohus, junior Nicole Gomez and sophomore Juliana Ceballos all put shots on target for the Scarlet Raiders, with the team's best chance coming on a bullet off the foot of Ceballos on a free kick.

Despite the 4-0 deficit, Rutgers-Newark played the entire 90, generating three late corners in the final 3:09. Junior Sabrina Solorzano had a late chance in front but her bid sailed high.
