NEWARK, N.J. (September 26, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team played Brooklyn College to a 0-0 draw Monday night on Alumni Field.
Despite a massive 33-5 margin in shots, the Scarlet Raiders had to settle for the tie as Brooklyn goalkeeper Samantha Rodriguez made 17 saves in the match with several being of the spectacular variety.
Rutgers-Newark moves to 1-7-2 on the season, while Brooklyn is now 4-3-1 with the non-conference stalemate. The Scarlet Raiders will return to the field Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. when they host New Jersey City University in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match.
Rutgers-Newark controlled the ball and field position for most of the first half, ending the period with a huge 13-1 margin in shots, putting six attempts on target but struggling to get any past Rodriguez.
Sophomore
Juliana Ceballos created several strong chances for herself and others, but the Elizabeth native just missed or Rodriguez was able to make save.
Back-to-back shots from junior
Haley Savva and junior
Nicole Gomez were both saved early in the second half, and with a shade over 20 minutes, Gomez nearly set up freshman
Shayna Bohus and Savva for a pair of close calls.
Ceballos had a free kick from the top of the box with about 10 minutes left in regulation, but that attempt sailed just over the top-right corner. Moments later, she created space and ripped a shot that look destined for the back of the net, but Ramirez made a marvelous save for the Bulldogs.
Ceballos had several other rips, the final coming with 52 seconds left and nipping the crossbar, but the two teams would go to overtime.
In the first overtime, Rutgers-Newark was able to generate several solid opportunities, with good looks for junior
Allyson Daly, Bohus and Ceballos getting saved.
Ramirez made a diving save to keep the match scoreless early in the second overtime, and neither team was able to muster much over the final nine minutes.
Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho earned the 110-minute shutout for the Scarlet Raiders. She now has two individual clean sheets this season, both coming in scoreless draws.
R-N ended the game with an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.
