Women’s Basketball Drops NJAC Contest at Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. (January 14, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team was defeated by Rowan University by a score of 94-52 Saturday afternoon in Glassboro.
 
The Scarlet Raiders drop to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the league, while Rowan moves to 12-4 overall and 6-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
 
The Scarlet Raiders will look to get back into the win column Wednesday when they host New Jersey City University in another key NJAC matchup. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. from The Golden Dome.
 
Senior guard Maria Simmons led the Scarlet Raiders with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, adding five assists and five steals to her line. Sophomore guard Faith Ashby pocketed 18 points, four boards, and two assists, with freshman guard-forward Louise Ann Borja ending the game with six points, five rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
 
Rutgers-Newark shot 24.6 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from distance and 16-for-25 at the line. Rowan ended with a 59-42 margin on the glass and had a 40-10 margin in bench points, shooting 40 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from distance.
 
The hosts were able to build an 11-point margin after 10 minutes of play, but Newark fought within five points less than two minutes into the second quarter thanks to a buckets from freshman Hannah Ashby, Borja and Faith Ashby.
 
From that point, Rowan seized control and was able to take a 42-25 lead into the intermission. After the break, the Profs continued to play well, opening a 32-point edge after three before settling on the 94-52 final.
 
Five Profs scored in double figures and six players totaled six or more rebounds.
