JOIN THE FIGHT

NEWARK, N.J. (January 21, 2017)
– On Wednesday night, January 25, the Rutgers University-Newark basketball teams will host New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Kean University in The Golden Dome. In addition to looking for important league wins, the Scarlet Raider men and women will be participating in the Play 4 Kay initiative and wearing pink shooting shirts in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The R-N women get things started at 6 p.m. against the Cougars, and the men will follow at 8 p.m. in contests that will be important to the NJAC playoff race as both teams look to claw their way into the top-six of the conference standings.

Rutgers-Newark will be donating all proceeds from admission to the doubleheader and all funds raised through giving jars directly back to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. There will be special halftime presentations at each game and the entire night is sponsored by RWJ Barnabas Health.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded in December of 2007 from the vision of the organization's namesake, Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University Head Women's Basketball Coach. Since the Fund's inception, $5.28 million has been granted for scientific research and related programs focused on women's cancers thanks to the generosity and continued support of its donors. However, the program urges continued participation in the initiatives it supports because there is still much more progress to be made in the scientific community in regards to cancer research.

Both the Rutgers-Newark men's and women's basketball teams are in the conference playoff race after going 1-1 last week. Senior guard Maria Simmons and sophomore guard Faith Ashby led the ladies to a triumph over New Jersey City University last Wednesday night in The Golden Dome, while sophomore forward Mark Thomas and the R-N defense lifted the men's squad to an NJAC road win over Montclair State University Saturday afternoon.
