Stockton Tops Women’s Hoops in NJAC Play

NEWARK, N.J. (January 4, 2017) – Stockton University topped Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 80-48 Wednesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) women's basketball game in The Golden Dome.
 
Rutgers-Newark drops to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference, while the Ospreys move to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC. R-N will have a chance to get back in the win column in short order as the Raiders travel to William Paterson University Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip-off against their NJAC rivals.
 
Stockton was able to take control early on in the action, outscoring the hosts 20-10 in the first quarter and extending the advantage to 24 points at the half (43-19). The Scarlet Raiders fought in the second half, but ultimately fell by the 80-48 final.
 
Sophomore guard Faith Ashby led the Scarlet Raiders with 17 points, six rebounds and two assists, and senior guard Shala Glenn scored 13 points on 10 shots, adding six rebounds and a team-high four assists. Freshman guard Hannah Ashby had six points and four thefts, while junior forward Nicole Skelly had six points and two boards. Junior forward Nikki Sammartino tallied five rebounds off the bench, while freshman guard/forward Louise Ann Borja notched three steals, two assists, two points and three rebounds.
 
Newark shot 27.3 percent from the field, 16 percent from three and 8-for-13 at the line, dishing out 10 assists and racking up 10 steals. The Scarlet Raider ladies had 33 total rebounds and 22 of their 48 points came in the paint.
 
Stockton had four players in double figures, and the visitors were led by 18 points and 10 rebounds from Najha Treadwell who shot 9-for-11 from the floor. The Ospreys finished the game shooting 55.4 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent from three and 10-for-17 at the line. Stockton tallied 26 assists on 31 made baskets and never trailed in the contest.
