Women's Soccer Falls to NYU

NEWARK, N.J. (October 2, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team dropped a tough non-conference matchup this evening against regional foe New York University, 2-0. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 8-5 on the season while the Violets improve to 6-3-1.

The visitors set the tone early with a goal just 5:59 into the match. NYU earned a corner that was taken by sophomore Alex Benedict. Benedict sent a curling ball into the box that resulted in a scrum before classmate Isabelle Turner sent a header towards the net. R-N senior Angelika Barris was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line but her volley didn't make it out of the box. Violets senior Steph Ho won the 50-50 ball and sent it back to Turner who was able to finish off the attempt this time, sending her header back across the face of goal and into the right side of the netting.

NYU would tack on an insurance score in the 30th minute when Benedict slid an excellent through ball behind the defense to an oncoming sophomore Ashlyn Krygowski. Krygowski made no mistake, blasting a left-footed strike past the keeper to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Rutgers-Newark was able to create a few more chances and stayed in the contest. Barris saw her volley from the left side corralled while sophomore Deirdre Mackin sent a free kick from about 20 yards out just wide to the left.

For the game, the visitors held a 28-10 advantage in shots and 6-1 edge in corners.

Barris, junior Juliana Ceballos, and sophomore Ine Collins each put a shot on frame to lead the offense.

R-N sophomore netminder Heidi Paulson had a strong night in between the pipes, recording a career-high eight saves. NYU's sophomore goalie Sophia Danielsen made three stops to earn the win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday night when they host The City College of New York at 7:30 p.m.
