Montclair State Trips Women’s Soccer in Home Finale

NEWARK, N.J. (October 21, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team was defeated by a score of 2-0 Saturday night on Alumni Field at the hands of New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State University.

Rutgers-Newark drops to 8-9-1 overall and 2-6-0 in NJAC play, while MSU moves to 8-4-4 overall and 5-1-2 in league action. The Scarlet Raiders visit William Paterson University in an NJAC match Wednesday evening in the team's 2017 regular-season finale.

Prior to Saturday's game, Rutgers-Newark honored its seniors Diana Carvalho, Angelika Barris, Nicole Gomez, Allyson Daly and Haley Savva. Saturday marked the final regular-season home match in the group's career.

Carvalho was able to make a nice stop on the first Montclair shot of the match, and her counterpart, Molly Barrow, was able to do the same thing on a bid from sophomore Samantha Richter following a corner off the foot of junior Juliana Ceballos.

The Red Hawks pressed the Scarlet Raiders, breaking through late in the first half when freshman Imani Thompson carried in from 40 yards out, eventually taking a shot from the top of the box and putting it in the upper-left corner.

The Red Hawks pushed the lead to two goals 12:49 into the second when Emily Beenders possessed a loose ball, taking a shot from 20-yards out and the ball finding its way over the line after Carvalho was able to get a hand on it.

Four minutes after the MSU goal, Ceballos and freshman Ana Lucia Silveira generated quality chances, and the Scarlet Raider defense did what it could to keep R-N within two. Ceballos and freshman Melanie Egas nearly trimmed the lead in half, but Ceballos' rocket hammered the crossbar, and Egas saw a great shot stopped with a slide from Barrow after she controlled the rebound.

Montclair State ended the match with a 21-9 margin in shots, a 9-6 edge in shots on goal and a 5-2 margin in corners. Carvalho made seven saves for Rutgers-Newark while Barrow made six stops for the Red Hawks.

A win in the regular-season finale on Wednesday night would bring the Scarlet Raiders' record to .500, making the team eligible for an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament berth.
