Softball Clipped by Ramapo in League Doubleheader

Highlights

NEWARK, N.J. (April 11, 2017) –
The Rutgers University-Newark softball team was swept in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader Tuesday on Alumni Field by visiting Ramapo College. The Roadrunners won the opener, 7-0, and took the nightcap, 12-3.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 9-15 overall and 0-8 in league play, while Ramapo moves to 16-6 overall and 7-1 in the NJAC.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to jump back into the win column Thursday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. from Alumni Field.

Ramapo 7, Rutgers-Newark 0
Ramapo was able to take an early lead and shut down the Rutgers-Newark offense to win the opener, 7-0.

The Roadrunners opened up a 3-0 edge after two innings of play, scoring once in the first thanks in large part to a leadoff triple and twice more in the second on the back several well-placed singles.

Junior Kelly Yusko laced a single to begin the bottom of the second but was stranded by Roadrunner starter Katrina Buczkowski, and the Roadrunners tacked on three runs in the top half of the fourth to open a 6-0 edge.

Junior catcher Sam Held doubled with one out in the sixth inning for the second Scarlet Raider knock of the game, but the hosts were unable to capitalize and eventually fell by a 7-0 final.

Yusko and Held had the Scarlet Raider hits, freshman Brittany Kalesse reached when she was hit by a pitch and Yusko found her way on a second time with a walk.

Buczkowski went the distance for Ramapo to improve to 6-1 on the season. Yusko tossed 3.1 innings in the start for the Scarlet Raiders, allowing five runs on seven hits and she took the loss (6-9). Walizer hurled the final 3.2 frames for Rutgers, allowing two runs on five hits.

Leadoff hitter Jackie Howarth led Ramapo, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Ramapo 12, Rutgers-Newark 3 (5 inn.)
In the second game, Ramapo jumped in front early and never let go despite the Scarlet Raiders cutting a six-run deficit to three in the second inning.

Ramapo scored two runs in the first inning on a couple hits and an error, and after R-N struggled to find the big hit after two walks in the first, the Roadrunners added four runs on four hits and two errors to take a 6-0 edge.

Newark sliced into the Roadrunner lead in the bottom half of the second, scoring three times to get within three (6-3). Kalesse led off the inning with a walk, junior Kayla Gallo singled and junior Elizabeth Marflak walked to load the bases. Kalesse scored the first Rutgers-Newark run on a wild pitch, and a squeeze play off the bat of Walizer plated Gallo. Marflak eventually crossed on a two-out run-scoring single from Held, capping a nice inning for Rutgers.

Ramapo pushed one across in its half of the fourth and tallied five times in the fifth to clinch the NJAC win in five innings.

R-N totaled a pair of hits in the contest, getting a double, walk and RBI from Held and a single and run scored from Gallo.

Yusko suffered the loss for R-N, while Erin Fitzsimmons earned the win for Ramapo with 3.2 one-hit innings. First baseman Nicole Mahoney was one of four Roadrunners with multiple hits, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBI.
