GLASSBORO, N.J. (April 27, 2017) – The nationally-ranked No. 6 Rowan University softball team topped Rutgers University-Newark in both ends of a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday in Glassboro.
 
Rutgers-Newark falls to 3-13 in the league and 15-21 overall, and the Scarlet Raiders will host Stockton University in a conference doubleheader Saturday. First pitch from Alumni Field is slated for 1 p.m. Rowan moves to 12-4 in the conference and 31-5 overall.
 
Rowan 11, Rutgers-Newark 2 (5 inn.)
The hosts were able to snap the Scarlet Raiders' four-game win streak with an 11-2 five-inning victory in the opener.
 
The Profs were able to seize control early, plating five runs on six hits in the first inning and they never looked back.
 
Rutgers-Newark threatened in its half of the first, getting a double from junior 
Morgan Walizer and a walk from junior 
Kelly Yusko, but the Raiders were unable to score, and the Profs padded their advantage with four runs on six knocks in the second.
 
The Scarlet Raiders scored two in the fourth to get on the board. Junior 
Morgan Schweitzer singled to lead off, Yusko walked and freshman 
Brittany Kalesse was next, singling to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore 
Samantha Hoffman drove in the first run with a single, and junior 
Sam Held plated the other with a sacrifice fly.
 
The Profs pushed the lead back to nine (11-2) with two more runs in their half of the fourth, and despite getting two runners aboard in the top of the fifth, the Raiders were unable to score.
 
Schweitzer led Rutgers-Newark in game one, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hoffman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Kaleese was 1-for-3 and Walizer went 1-for-3 with a double.
 
Rowan 13, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)
Much like the first game, Rowan took control early in the second, pushing across eight runs on nine hits in the first inning. The Profs scored three more in the second and two in the third to extend the lead to 13-0.
 
The Scarlet Raiders loaded the bases in the fourth, getting singles from freshman 
Sarah Stiehler and Yusko and a walk to freshman 
Brittany Kalesse, but the Profs kept R-N off the board, and eventually closed out the 13-0 NJAC triumph.
